How to Grow & Harvest Sage

When to Plant

They can be directly seeded into your garden, or started indoors for transplanting later. Start sage seeds indoors, six weeks before the last frost. If planting outdoors, sow seeds after the soil has begun to warm in the spring.

How to Plant

Sage prefers full sun and well drained soil.  You can grow them in average soil and it will tolerate dry conditions.  Water during drought or once or twice a week.  Cut the plants back after blooming to encourage new growth.  Add a general purpose fertilizer once a growing season.

When to Harvest

Oftentimes, the leaves and stems of this herb can be found in sausages, pork, sauces, dressings, cheese and stuffing.  Sage is the traditional flavor associated with the Thanksgiving holiday.

Harvest and dry the leaves for brewing tea.  Store in an airtight container, in a cool and dry place.
